Repair Corrupted System Files Using SFC and DISM

Corrupted system files can be repaired using the built-in Windows programs System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM). Run these scans to see whether you have Windows update failures, missing DLL files, or performance problems.

Step 1: Start by Running the SFC Scan

Launch the Command Prompt in Administrator Mode:

  • Press Win + S, type Command Prompt, and choose Run as Administrator.

Launch the SFC Command:

    • Type the following command and press Enter:
sfc /scannow

Hold Off Until the Scan is Finished:

  • The scan could take a few minutes. Should corrupt files be discovered, Windows will try to fix them.

View the Outcomes:

  • If you see the message “Corrupt files were found and successfully repaired by Windows Resource Protection,” the problem has been resolved.
  • If the message states that some files could not be repaired, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: If SFC is Unable to Repair Files, Run the DISM Scan

Execute the DISM Command:

    • Enter the following and press Enter in the same Command Prompt window:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Allow the Procedure to Finish:

  • Depending on your system and internet speed, this process could take 10 to 15 minutes.

Restart Your Computer:

  • After the scan is finished, restart your computer and run sfc /scannow once more to see if the problem has been resolved.

When Should SFC and DISM Be Used?

  • Use SFC first to scan and fix system files.
  • Use DISM if SFC malfunctions or displays issues that it is unable to resolve.
