Office 2024 Still Not Launching After Installation? Here’s How to Fix It

Problem (Switch from Office 2021 to Office 2024) :I just went out and bought a separate copy of Microsoft Office 2024 Home and Business (64-bit) for my own use after having used Office 2021 for several years.

But when I try to open some files in Excel, Word, or PowerPoint, they all still open in Office 2021 apps. Apparently, the interface looks the same, and none of the new features from the Office 2024 version are available.

Interestingly, I saw there is hardly anything there in my Program Files Microsoft Office Office16 folder, and I cannot see the .exe files to open the apps. Everything seems to be contained in the Office15 folder.

Step 1: Check Whether Office 2021 Has Been Completely Uninstalled

Some remnants of Office 2021 might have forced your system to default to those respective apps. Follow the steps below to ensure complete Office 2021 removal:

Uninstall Office 2021 through Settings:

  • Press Win + I to launch Settings.
  • Select Apps > Installed apps.
  • Search for Microsoft Office 2021, select it and proceed to click Uninstall.
  • After the uninstallation is done, reboot the PC.

Use Microsoft Office Uninstall Tool:

  1. If Office 2021 keeps coming up or it’s refusing to be uninstalled, download the Microsoft Office Uninstall Tool from here.Use the tool to remove Office 2021 and all related files and remnants. When done, restart your computer.

Step 2: Correct Reinstallation of Office 2024

Download Office 2024 Again:

  • Open www.office.com and sign into the account associated with your Office 2024 purchase. Under Services & Subscriptions, click Install next to Office 2024.

    • Run Installer as Administrator:

  • Right-click on the Office 2024 installer and select Run as Administrator to ensure that it will perform the installation without any obstruction and with all required permissions. Proceed with the onscreen instructions to completion.
