Computer freezes when checking for Windows Updates or when encountering Error Code 80070570 during an upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8.When you try to download or install updates from Windows Update in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista, the computer may freeze. If the computer freezes during installation, follow the steps below to resolve the issue.
Solution 1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
Use the Windows Update Troubleshooter to identify and fix issues. Follow these steps:
- Press the Windows logo + W keys to open the search box.
- Type troubleshooting and hit Enter.
- Click on System and Security.
- Select Windows Update and follow the on-screen instructions.
Solution 2: Run the Update Scan Again
If the scan freezes and does not complete when checking for updates, restart your computer and attempt the update scan again. Ensure all background applications are closed for better performance.
Solution 3: Perform a System Restore
If issues persist, use System Restore to revert your system to a previous working state. Here’s how:
- Manually turn off your computer by pressing the power button.
- Restart your computer and at the login screen, tap or click the power icon in the lower-right corner.
- Press and hold the Shift key, then tap or click Restart.
- On the Choose an Option page, tap or click Troubleshoot, then select Advanced Options.
- Tap or click System Restore, and follow the prompts to restore your system to a previous state.
Solution 4: Refresh Your PC
If System Restore does not resolve the issue, use the “Refresh your PC” tool to reinstall Windows while keeping personal files intact:
- Turn off your computer manually and restart it.
- At the login screen, tap or click the power icon in the lower-right corner.
- Press and hold the Shift key, then tap or click Restart.
- On the Choose an Option page, tap or click Troubleshoot, then select Advanced Options.
- Select Refresh your PC and follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: Refreshing your PC will remove applications not included in the original installation, but personal files will remain intact. A list of removed apps will be saved on the desktop after the refresh.
